Our Tribe - About Us
Belonging sits at the heart of everything we do.
We know that when young people feel they belong, they are ready to learn, to grow, and to take positive steps towards their future.
At The Ranch, belonging means:
-
Being welcomed and accepted for who you are.
-
Feeling safe and supported by trusted adults.
-
Knowing your voice matters and your experiences are understood.
-
Learning in a community that values diversity, respect and kindness.
This sense of connection is what transforms disengagement into motivation and builds resilience for lifelong learning.
At The Ranch, we provide nurturing, relationship-led alternative provision for children and young people who need something different from traditional classroom-based education.
Many of our learners arrive with experiences of anxiety, trauma, SEND, SEMH needs, disrupted education, low confidence or school-based overwhelm. We do not see these young people as difficult or broken. We see young people who need safety, trust, time, consistency and the right environment to begin learning again.
Through animals, nature, practical skills, trusted adults and carefully planned learning, we help young people rebuild confidence, develop resilience and feel proud of who they are.
The Ranch was previously known in some education and community settings as The Ranch Xtreme. We now use The Ranch as our main identity, while continuing the same commitment to safe, nurturing and high-quality alternative provision.

Our Approach: A Curriculum Rooted in Experience
Our curriculum is therapeutic, experiential and relationship-based.
It’s designed to develop both academic confidence and emotional resilience, ensuring that progress is personal, purposeful and sustainable.
Our curriculum blends academic learning, practical skills, and emotional development in equal measure.
It includes:
-
Animal-assisted learning and wellbeing activities – supporting emotional regulation, empathy, confidence, responsibility and self-awareness through carefully supervised interaction with animals.
-
Accredited qualifications in Animal Care, Land-Based Skills, and Equine Studies, preparing young people for further education or employment.
-
The EquiScholars Stewardship Programme – where learners develop leadership, confidence, and responsibility through partnership with horses.
-
Forest School activities – encouraging curiosity, teamwork, problem-solving and resilience through hands-on outdoor experiences.
-
Archery.
-
Tabletop strategy, social communication and creative club.
-
ASDAN aligned short courses.
-
Functional Skills and Life Skills.
-
Access to tutor led core learning.
We work closely with schools, local authorities, families and professional networks to ensure each placement is purposeful, safe and carefully planned.
Our team contributes to reviews, transition planning, reintegration work, safeguarding discussions and outcome-focused provision planning. We understand that alternative provision must be more than a safe place to attend; it must help young people move forward.

Who We Support
We support children and young people who may be experiencing barriers to education, including anxiety, emotionally based school avoidance, trauma, neurodivergence, social communication needs, SEMH needs, low self-esteem, attachment needs or previous negative experiences of school.
Our provision is designed to be calm, relational and flexible, while still maintaining clear routines, safeguarding expectations and purposeful learning outcomes.
What Makes The Ranch Different
What makes The Ranch different is not simply the animals, the land or the activities. It is the way our team uses these environments to build trust, emotional safety and meaningful engagement.
Young people are supported by consistent adults who understand behaviour as communication. We take time to notice what a young person is showing us, not just what they are saying. We work gently but purposefully, helping learners to develop confidence, responsibility, communication, emotional regulation and a stronger sense of belonging.
Our Promise
Our promise is to meet young people with warmth, curiosity and respect.
We will not rush trust.
We will not shame behaviour.
We will not expect every learner to fit the same pathway.
We will notice strengths, celebrate progress and help young people take the next safe step.
For some learners, that next step may be attending regularly. For others, it may be speaking to a trusted adult, joining a group, completing a qualification, returning to school, preparing for college or simply beginning to believe that they are capable again.
